“Y’all think small, I think Biggie”
– Jay-Z on “Family Feud

Far too often, we focus on what’s ahead. We’re looking at our calendars for what’s coming up, what we need to plan for, and what to expect. Whether it’s tomorrow’s meeting, next week’s social event, or next month’s movie release (there’s a lot more examples), we get caught up. I mean, I know I’m guilty of it. Instead of focusing on what we already have, we’re constantly thinking about what we don’t have. So with this month’s Opinions Column, I wanna focus on something really important…gratitude.

Before we move ahead though, welcome! This is the July 2017 Opinions Column. It’s here that I talk about anything and everything that’s going on with me. For those that’re returning, welcome back! And for those that’re new to the site, glad to have you here. With that said, let’s talk ’bout the topic of this month’s Opinions Column, gratitude, and why it’s so important.

So this month is my birthday month. And with every birthday, I try to reflect on where I’ve been and where I’m going to. More than anything though, I’m always like “yo, this year I’m gonna do this” or “yea son, it’s about to be on for real for real.” Lol and while that’s ok (and that attitude is healthy), I won’t do that this month…well, at least not in this Opinions Column. Instead, I need to take a moment and be grateful for what I have and how far I’ve come. Actually, it’s important that we all do that.

Let’s start first with this music journey I’ve been on. I’ve been rhyming since like middle school. And since then, I’ve accomplished a GREAT deal. I’ve won rap battles, performed in multiple cities, and even been on TV. I’ve released four mixtapes, several singles, and lots of music videos too. I’ve been featured in magazines, interviewed by blogs, and connected with people. I mean damn son, I’ve done a lot. Now, I’m not saying any of this to brag or boast or whatever. Far from it. Instead, I’m trying to remind myself of how much I’ve done and how far the journey has been. Quite often, we get discouraged when things aren’t going our way. But I mean, in times like those, you gotta remind yourself of how far you have come and all the accomplishments you’ve achieved. Is there more work to do? Absolutely. But we’re not talking about that, remember? Lol. Instead, we’re taking a moment to say “wow, there is a lot going on for me…and for that, I’m grateful.”

On a personal note, I’m also very grateful. From family to friends, I’m also very blessed. I’m surrounded by a lot of love and I can’t help but be thankful about it. I mean, it is surreal.

I guess what I’m tryna get at is…sometimes (actually more than that), it’s important to reflect on all that you have in your life instead of what’s coming up in your life. Instead of asking what moves you’re gonna make, show gratitude for the moves you HAVE made. Rather than questioning whether life will be good, look around and realize how good life already is. If you’re reading this, consider yourself blessed for so many reasons. There’s many people that don’t have the opportunities that you have. Life’s a blessing, man…embrace it.

And that’ll do it for me. This month, I just wanna look around and be thankful for it all…the good stuff, and even the bad stuff…cause without all of it, I wouldn’t be where I’m at today.

With that, I’m outta here. Hope this gave you as much inspiration as it did for me. Until the next Opinions Column, stay up, stay safe, and hold ya head! Ajaxxx signing out, PEACEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
